I have exactly seven photos from the time I was born until my 21st year.
The reason for this is sad and messy, and I won’t get into the sordid details on here. I will say, however, that it’s made me realize the absolute importance of a photograph.
Pictures document our lives in a way that our human minds – sadly – cannot. The colors, details, and vivid imagery of a photograph has the power to spark memories. To remind us of who we were, where we came from and, perhaps most importantly, who we loved.
Needless to say, there’s not much I wouldn’t do to get my hands on those photographs from the first half of my life.
Maybe that’s why I find documenting the lives of others so important today.
My sessions are not mere 20 minute shoots where all you do is sit, pose, smile, and say ‘cheese’, thank-you-very-much. Rather, they are real, raw, and gritty. Let’s go to the mountains, the beach, have a picnic in the desert. What about taking a hike in the Cascades, a boat ride on the Sound, or barbecuing dinner in your backyard? How do you spend your lazy days with your loved ones? Is it lounging around in your pajamas, curled up on the couch in front of a cozy fire and reading books all afternoon? Let me capture THAT. Those are the memories you’ll look back on in your lovely golden years and say, “Yeah. Yeah, we did life right.”
^^ When you think of a session with me, think of that. ^^
